What an exciting day I had yesterday. My first ever radio interview with Cameron Wilson from the Bush Telegraph segment on Radio National talking about the 5000 Poppies Project … I must admit I was just a tad nervous.
Cameron was appropriately impressed with the project, and when he read some of the dedications … I kinda felt like he was surprised that people would share such heartfelt stories with us. And also surprised that it’s possible just through word of mouth (and of course the power of the internet) that you can garner such support for a project of this nature. He obviously does not know crafters!!! You can listen to the podcast here
So now the ABC have challenged us to make in excess of 60,000 poppies for the Australian contingent … and with the uptake we are experiencing … it does not seem outside the realms of possibility … or am I dreaming? Nevertheless … we are well on the way to our first 5000 and don’t really want to stop there. So I’d love to know if you think we could do that? They don’t all have to be planted in Melbourne … we would love to see some regional displays as well … and they can count towards the total. And then there is New Zealand : 5000 in New Zealand is a goodly number … I am planning to send a bunch over to New Zealand in memory of my father-in-law Alden Berry, who was a New Zealander but flew with the RAF during WWII.
We really cannot thank all of you who are taking this project by the horns and breathing life into it enough … for sharing your time, your skills and your wonderful stories with us … it’s quite humbling.

sounds like a doable plan to me !!!! everyone is happy making poppies & there are so many creative people out there some of the pictures that are coming up on facebook are truly inspiring keep up the good work everyone !!!!

A wonderful project. I have moved and I do not have my things with us yet. I will gather some needles and hook together and get cracking again on some poppies. I have made some locally just myself so I have a pattern saved- I think!🙄 This is a wonderful project and helps us connect emotionally to all of those women who knitted, socks, scarves, balaclavas for the troops. Keep up the good work! Lest we forget!
