I feel like it’s forever since I posted … and in the scheme of things I guess it is. But that doesn’t mean that things have not been happening in Poppy land. Poppies are rolling in although it slowed to a trickle over Christmas, we have collected around 300 since Christmas with more on the way and have quietly pushed up over the 7000 mark. Every day now have more enquiries from organisations about starting up a local Poppy making groups … libraries … knitting groups …. craft guilds are coming on board every day. And we are starting to plan our workshops.
Apart from the regular 2nd Monday of the month workshops at Fed Square … we are planning a massive poppy making rally in Fed Square on Anzac Day this year … mark the date in your diary … from 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. …. you will hear more about this later as the time draws near. I have now booked two workshops with the Wondoflex Yarncraft Centre in Malvern Vic for March and April … and their plan is the continue workshops throughout the year … plus they are a collection point for local crafters. We have more collection points are coming on board all around Australia … see the collections points page for a collection point in your local area or feel free to volunteer to be a collection point on our behalf if you would like to take on the responsibility of ensuring that the poppies make it to us. I would like to thank again … all of those who have offered to take on the task of collection on our behalf.
If you are interested in running regular poppy making gatherings … we would encourage you to start … it’s a great way to meet new people and it’s a fun thing to do. There are many libraries starting up Poppy making groups in conjunction with craft groups … so you could approach your local library or community house about space to gather regularly.
And just a reminder that all of this to date has been run without any funding at all … and we are still looking for a sponsor or sponsors to help to make the ultimate project the successful installation we know it can be. If you have any ideas … feel free to contact us initially at 5000poppies@gmail.com
Enjoy your poppy making. Hope to see a few of you at Fed Square this coming Monday from 12.00 until 2.00 p.m. and if not maybe at one of the other poppy making workshops or even (and especially) at our big Fed Square Poppy Playtime on Anzac Day.
I think the government has grants for this type of thing. I have no idea how to go about getting a grant, but if you contacted someone in the government grants office you might have success. Hope this helps. 🙂
Hi aussieyarning
If you go to http://www.anzaccentenary.gov.au there is all the info for grants for ANZAC Day 2015. Our group looked at it but apparently it can take many months to be advised if you get a grant or not. Hope these are the grants you were thinking of.
Cheers.
Julie
